VINTAGE ANTIQUE WALWORTH MFG Pipe Wrench RARE Design Quick Adjusting (Tong) USA. Here\'s an Antique Rare Walworth Mfg. Boston Pipe Wrench Slip/Sliding Adjustable Jaw. Shows normal wear. Some will know Walworth is famous for the original Stillson pipe wrench, with the familiar threaded collar. The moving jaw on this one slide in and out and a wedge lock in teeth on the handle when pressure is applied to turn the pipe. RARE

HISTORY :

The Walworth Manufacturing Company was a maker of pipe wrenches and other plumbing tools operating in Boston, Massachusetts. The company was founded in 1852 as J.J. Walworth & Company and later incorporated as Walworth Manufacturing in 1872. The founder was James J. Walworth, who served as company president until 1890. Walworth Manufacturing is most famous as the original maker of the Stillson pipe wrench, named after its inventor Daniel Stillson, who was an employee of the company at the time.While working for Walworth, Daniel Chapman and his cousin, John Chapman, came up with the idea for a tool they called a pipe tong. It made the turning of gas pipe easier, and it caught on. They got a patent for this on Oct. 31, 1865. All those years spent on ships were paying off.

Four years later, Daniel Chapman received another patent, this one for a tool that he had first whittled out of wood. He showed this tool to Levi Greene, who’d been an engineer during the war on one of the ships where Chapman had been the fireman. They must have been delighted to find each other working at the same company after the war.
