Antique RPPC postcard BUCKAU the FLETTNER ROTOR SHIP Magnus Effect Sails 1915 For Sale

RARE antique RPPC postcard: THE BUCKAU, the FLETTNER ROTOR SHIP, with short message dated 1915. In this image a tugboat and two small sailboats are blocking the portion of the hull that says “FLETTNER ROTOR”; location of the image is somewhere in the UK or Scandinavia, based on the language of the written message.

Originally built as an auxiliary sailing schooner in 1920, she was converted in 1925 as the first rotor ship using Flettner Rotors. Flettner Rotors work on the principle of the Magnus Effect, which is what causes baseballs to curve when thrown. Flettner Rotors also provide much more thrust from the same surface area when compared to traditional sails. These modern sails are now being used as wind assist systems on dozens of ships and are projected in some cases as the principal propulsion of several vessels currently in the design stage.
