World\'s Columbian Exposition (1893 : Chicago, Ill.). Board of Lady Managers

The Board of Lady Managers of the World\'s Columbian Exposition was organized November 19, 1890. It oversaw the construction of The Woman\'s Building in Chicago and organized the exposition\'s World\'s Congress of Representative Women (1893). A cookbook with autographed recipes of board members was also issued.

The Board of Lady Managers was created by the U.S. Congress to see that women were placed upon the Juries of Award, which were to pass upon work done wholly or in part by women, and to perform such other duties as might be assigned by the Exposition\'s National Commission. It was subsequently given by the Commission full management and control of the building known as the Woman\'s Building, together with the general charge and management of the interests of women in all of the Exposition buildings. It was made the official channel of communication through which all women or organizations of women were to be brought into relation with the Exposition, and through which applications for space for women or their exhibits should be received. The members of the Board succeeded in securing for women the fullest possible representation in the department buildings, and modified their original plans in order to increase the amount of space to be put at their disposal in the Woman\'s Building.

Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, 1st Baroness Burdett-Coutts (21 April 1814 – 30 December 1906), born Angela Georgina Burdett, was a British philanthropist, the daughter of Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Baronet and Sophia, formerly Coutts, daughter of banker Thomas Coutts. In 1837 she became one of the wealthiest women in England when she inherited her grandfather\'s fortune of around £1.8 million (equivalent to £170,000,000 in 2021) following the death of her stepgrandmother, Harriot Beauclerk, Duchess of St Albans. She joined the surnames of her father and grandfather, by royal licence, to become Burdett-Coutts. Edward VII is reported to have described her as \"after my mother, the most remarkable woman in the kingdom\".

Burdett-Coutts spent the majority of her wealth on scholarships, endowments, and a wide range of philanthropic causes. One of her earliest philanthropic acts was to co-found (with Charles Dickens) a home for young women who had \"turned to a life of immorality\", including theft and prostitution. The home was known as Urania Cottage.

She avoided taking sides in partisan politics, but was actively interested in improving the condition of indigenous Africans, or the education and relief of the poor or suffering in any part of the world. Though she made no special distinction of creed in her charities, Burdett-Coutts was a notable benefactor of the Church of England, building two churches – including St Stephen\'s Church, Rochester Row, Westminster – and endowing church schools. As executor of the will of the Reverend Chauncy Hare Townshend (the author of several volumes of poetry), she, with the Rev. Thomas Helmore (also a poet), used money from Townshend\'s estate to build a primary school in Westminster, known as Burdett-Coutts & Townshend Foundation Church of England Primary School.

Burdett-Coutts founded Columbia Market in 1869, in Bethnal Green in the East End of London, the district where much of her work was carried out. With her project in Columbia Square she became a pioneer in social housing. Through her support of missionary and nursing efforts she was associated with Louisa Twining and Florence Nightingale. Her small housing development, Holly Village, on the corner of what was then her estate, is now in private hands and may still be seen in Highgate. She was also the president of the British Goat Society.

1st Letter in Book

CHICAGO, JANUARY, 1893.

TO HER ROYAL HIGHNESS,

PRINCESS MARY ADELAIDE,

DUCHESS OF TECK.

MADAM, I hope you will permit me as President of the Board of Lady Managers of the Columbian Exhibition to address Your Royal Highness on a matter of some importance, and one in which we venture to ask your gracious assistance.

Your Royal Highness will be aware that the Exhibition will include as one of its most valued features a Section devoted to the Philanthropic Work of British Women. This has been prepared by the Baroness Burdett-Coutts, the President of the Committee appointed for the purpose, and will, I understand, supply a most interesting

record of women\'s philanthropic work in Great Britain. The fact, however, that the Baroness has undertaken this work, while greatly enhancing its importance and interest, gives rise to a difficulty which will seriously impair the value of the exhibit. It is obvious that no record of the Philanthropic Work of Englishwomen could be complete, or in any sense satisfactory, without some account of the great part which the Baroness herself has taken in such work. Her name is almost as well known and honored throughout this country as it is in England, not only for a long life of noble deeds, but for the practical insight, untiring devotion, and great wisdom, which she has brought to bear upon philanthropic subjects.

In reply to an official inquiry the Baroness has informed me that as

President of her Section she does not propose to include any account of her individual work.

My Board considers it essential to the success of the exhibit that this deficiency should be supplied, and knowing that the Baroness has long enjoyed Your Royal Highness\' friendship, extending to personal assistance in some of her works, we venture to turn to Your Royal Highness as one to help us to fill up the gap which I have indicated.

That object would be attained if Your Royal Highness could arrange that some record of the Baroness Burdett-Coutts\' work could be supplied to the Exhibition, together, possibly, with any models or illustrations that may be available. For this purpose we should be happy to place a special position in the Women\'s Building at Your Royal Highness\' disposal.

I need hardly add that by acceding to this request Your Royal Highness would confer a distinguished favor on the Board of Managers, and that such participation in our labors would be accepted as a very gracious act by all American women.

I remain with much respect,

Your Royal Highness\' faithful servant, BERTHA HONORÉ PALMER,

PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF LADY MANAGERS.
