These are devotional medals from Conventswe work with as well as donor collector estates that have gifted their medalsto us to help the convents we work with. Here from the estate of Bertha, (thefounder of Church-Woman Antiques) is one of her medals from her Visit to theLourdes Shrine in the 1970's. These medals were each blessed at the shrine bythe resident priest before they made the long trip back from France. Werecently found them along with her provenance notes written over 40 years ago. This medal is 1 inch long and weighs 4 grams sterling. This sale will help aCarmelite community of nuns in South America in their work of feeding the poor.

Here is the story of the Catholic Miraculous Medal; andwhy Bertha decided to bring these medals with her to Lourdes. On 27 November1830 Saint Catherine reported that the Blessed Mother appeared to her duringevening meditations. She displayed herself inside an oval frame, standing upona globe. She wore many rings set with gems that shone rays of light over theglobe. Around the margin of the frame appeared the words Ô Marie, conçue sanspéché, priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous ("O Mary, conceivedwithout sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee"). As Catherinewatched, the frame seemed to rotate, showing a circle of twelve stars, a largeletter M surmounted by a cross, and the stylized Sacred Heart of Jesus crownedwith thorns and Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced with a sword. Asked why someof the gems did not shed light, Mary reportedly replied, "Those are thegraces for which people forget to ask." Sister Catherine then heard theVirgin Mary ask her to take these images to her father confessor, telling himthat they should be put on medallions, and saying "All who wear them willreceive great graces."
