Chantry Chapel is based on Wakefield St. Mary's Chapel.In the 12th century there was a marked increase in royal and aristocratic endowment and support of religious institutions as places which would provide a fitting burial chapel and ongoing intervention for the souls of the departed. Chantry Chapels were built and endowed to sing (chant) prayers for departed souls to speed their transition through purgatory. It was believed that prayers for the dead could ease their passage through this stage of purification and penance. Very few remain.
