Civil War Document \"AID TO VOLUNTEERS\" for Pay to Soldier\'s Family (Nov. 7,1864): $89.00
This remarkable survivor of the American Civil War is an official Wisconsin document titled \"AID TO VOLUNTEERS\" the purpose of which was to advance a soldier\'s wages to his family in need. It consists of an official cover from the office of the Secretary of State (presumably Secretary of State for Wisconsin Lucius Fairchild where the document was issued) and hand written testimony by witnesses affirming the identity of the soldier and attesting to the need of his family in Portage, Wis.. The soldier\'s name was James Dolan of Company H (or possibly N), 14th Regiment of Infantry which was raised in Fon du Lac on January 30, 1862. This document is affirmed and signed by two Justices of Peace: H. S. Haskell and L Funkenstein and carries two 5 cent Internal Revenue stamps (in excellent hand cancelled condition). It is signed by the Secretary of State on Nov. 7, 1864. Stock number SAZ-157
