Offering a charming antique porcelain wall plaque showinga monk enjoying a long swig of wine. Hecarries a basket of fresh victuals but it appears he won't be sharing the wine with his brothers. Curiously, his thumb is bandaged. We may not be in on the monk's story, but thetableau is humorous, appealing and beautifully and realistically detailed.
The hand-painting is exquisite and highly detailed. Satiny glaze. Not a reproduction.
Made circa 1900. Stampedin greenish-black on unglazed reverse is the mark "T&V France" (Tressemann& Vogt of Limoges). Barely visible (photoin black and white to slightly improve contrast) is a reddish decorator markthat by its shape would read “Hand Painted / Limoges / T.V.”. There’s also a penciled number and name thatlooks like Van Noone, perhaps the factory artist. Additional penciled numbers indicate framingspecs.
Decorative wood frame is original and sturdy but showswear and loss of adhered embellishments after more than a century. Ready to hang with original wire.
