More than 40 years ago, Dave Eldreth (1945 - 2023) started ELDRETH POTTERY with a load of clay that he picked up in his 1972 Ford Pinto and crafted on a potter’s wheel made from an old Maytag washing machine. Through the years they became known for their traditional salt glazed stoneware made in the Amish region of Pennsylvania. The handmade pieces were produced using techniques from over 500 years ago. Salt is introduced into the kiln above 2000 degrees Fahrenheit to form a sodium vapor that sticks to the clay giving a glass-like coating on the pottery. This uncontrolled process makes each piece unique.
