Classic original Victorian Trade Card from about the 1870\'s to 1880\'s advertising The Smith & Shaw Electric Co. The reverse of the card has a purple handstamp stating: \"For sale at the Exhibition Building. R.R. 12\". This might be an 1876 Centennial Exhibition card.
They manufactured a quack medical device known as \"The Electric Dumb Bell\". The card states that \"This electric dumb bell is also a perfect and complete electro-magnetic machine for medical use\". The company was located at 168 West 34th Street, New York City.
The illustration shows their ridiculous product with a man and a woman demonstrating the device. Electricity was a new concept back in those days and many unscrupulous companies took advantage of people\'s gullibility to make huge profits from quack medicine and medical devices.
