ETHEL YOUVELLA (HOPI, 1919-2006) LARGE POLYCHROME POTTERY JAR, EXCELLENT, 20TH C
Ethel Youvella (1919-2006)
Ethel Youvella was a Hopi-Tewa potter from First Mesa, Arizona where she created pieces using traditional
family techniques. She was a niece of famous Hopi-Tewa potter Grace Chapella. In the early years she didn’t sign her work. With the added interest of the tourist trade that began in the early years of the 20th century she began to sign her pieces. She used various signatures. In addition to her name, at various times she signed Polacca, AZ, Hopi First Mesa, and Tewa Village.
An unusually large example from this potter that measures approximately 11” D x 6.25” H. Signed on base. Fresh to the market from a longtime collection of Hopi pottery.
