Imperial German porcelain beer stein my father acquired while stationed with US Army Air Corps in Wiesbaden, Germany from 1946-1949. It\'s labeled as 0.5L in volume and measures about 11\" tall by 4 3/8\" at the base. The stein appears to be for a reservist in an infantry regiment. On the top rim is written: \"Wir standen am Vogesenrand zum Schutze fur das Vaterland\" which translates to \"We stand at the edge of the Vogesen (low mountains in southwest Germany on French border) to guard for the Fatherland\". The writing at the base states \"5. Comp 8 Wurtt. Inft.Rgt. Nr. 126\" (5th Company, 8 Wurttemberg Infantry Regiment Number 126). Just above that it states \"Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit\" (remembrance of my service time) 1905-1907. Mandatory military service in the German Confederation was generally for all men 17 to 45 years of age.The tour of active duty was three years for Calvary and Artillery, but only two years for infantry. Upon completion of their active duty these Reservists could purchase service souvenirs from the Regimental canteen such as this Stein, pipes, flasks, schnapps cups, etc. Regimental Steins were usually produced in porcelain and decorated with decal transfers touched up with hand painting and then fired. The glazes on steins included great varieties of color and brilliance. The pewter work on most regimental steins is both elaborate and meaningful. The lid andthumb lift of this example are symbolic of Baden. There is a slight \"tear\" in the pewter where it attaches to the hinge.
The bottom of the beer stein has alithophane of a soldier and a womanshaking hands. There are two words above them, the one on the left I can\'t make out but the word on the right is \"heimat\" (home).
Please look at pictures carefully before offerding, if you know more specific information about this stein I would be more than happy to learn.
Please email with any questions, obviously sold as-is.
