Antique Gibson Art Pin Collection, Circa 1906, The Art Jewelry Company, Central Falls, Rhode Island, Rare
These lovely pins were recently discovered in a box of personal items owned by one of our grandmothers. They are Victorian-style portrait brooches created by the Art Jewelry Company, who mailed them out to interested individuals around the turn of the century, and asked them to sell the pieces directly to their neighbors, family and friends in return for "a lovely article".
We can date these pins to 1906 or earlier, because the box was addressed to our grandmother when she lived in Cainsville, Missouri. She ultimately moved with her family to another town in Northern Missouri later that same year.
Each piece measures 1 1/8"(l) x 3/8"(w) and has a metal (brass?) backing, scrolled border and simple C-clasp. The nine portraits appear to be most likely reproduced photographs protected by a shellac covering. All but one are still attached to their original paper mounts, making it unlikely that they were ever worn.
Nice collectible that could be displayed and/or worn in either the classic Victorian or Steampunk tradition.
