Goodell Pratt Toolsmiths Hand Crank Bench Top Cast Iron Drill Press USA:
$225.00

Goodell-Pratt Company Toolsmiths Hand Crank Bench Top Cast Iron Drill Press. Made in the USA prior to 1948. Dimensions: approx. 23 inches tall overall and coonstructed using cast iron and steel with a polished wooden crank handle. Shows expected wear from age and use but is still in good operating condition. A rare model and very collectible. This item is located in the USA.

William M. Pratt was born in Shelburne Falls, Mass, on August 13, 1867. After graduating from secondary school in 1884, he held a series of jobs until in 1898, he purchased a controlling interest in the Goodell Brothers Company, which shortly after, changed its name to Goodell-Pratt Company. The company’s products were push, hand, bench and breast drills, spiral screwdrivers, a bit brace, polishing heads, hack saws and blades, glass cutters, and hollow-handled tool sets. Pratt was a very astute businessman and commenced a series of acquisitions of other tool manufacturers over a period of years that resulted in additional products and markets. During WW I, his company’s workforce reached an all-time high of 740 employees. However, the company was highly leveraged and suffered significant losses after the market crash and depression of 1929. In 1931, the company was forced to merge with the Miller Falls Company. Miller Falls continued to use the Godell-Pratt brand on selected tools until 1948 and used the trademark on selected mailings until 1957.
