Large vintage Krenit bowl, designed by Herbert Krenchel and made in Denmark by Torben Ørskov & Co, sometime between 1953 - 1964. Approximately 10\" diameter x 4.25\" high -- large salad bowl size. Mint green enamel interior. Marked at bottom \"Krenit Denmark.\"
Herbert Krenchel was a Danish scientist whose obsession with materials led him, practically by accident, to design what became a mid-century design classic: the Krenit bowl. Krenchel was driven to design a bowl with an incredibly thin edge and an interesting combination of materiality and color. He developed a new process that allowed him to create the signature shape of the bowl with incredibly thin steel, line the inside with colorful enamel, and sandblast the outside to create a matte finish -- resulting in a beautiful contrast between the shiny, colorful interior and matte black exterior. At the time that Krenchel was working on this design, it was becoming more popular in Danish households to serve large green salads at the dinner table, so he had that in mind particularly when designing these larger bowls.
The original Krenit bowls were in production only from 1953 - 1964, when enamel factories began closing en masse and Krenchel could no longer find a factory he was satisfied with to make the bowls. They remain a Danish design classic, with the original bowls becoming more and more scarce as the years go on.
This bowl has signs of wear typical with its age: small chips along the edges, surface markings on the interior enamel and exterior finish, and fingerprint markings throughout the exterior finish. I\'ve read that a light coat of oil on the exterior will even out the coloration, but will leave that up to the buyer.
