Julie Andrews Camelot Program Broadway 1962 Walt Disney Mary Poppins Meeting NYC Julie Andrews Camelot Program Broadway 1962 Walt Disney Mary Poppins Meeting NYC

Classic Julie Andrews Treasures from Saturday\'s Toys presents...  anoriginal PLAYBILL theatrical program from CAMELOT starring Julie Andrews as Guenevere.

From the week of January 29, 1962 performances at the MajesticTheatre (home of \"Phantom of the Opera\" from January 1988 - April 2023) in New York City.... only weeks before Walt Disney attended an April 1962 performance of Camelot and paid a visit backstage to meet the actress he hoped to convince to accept the leading role in his upcoming film production of  \"Mary Poppins.\"

Broadway\'s \"Camelot\" had premiered on Dec. 3, 1960 with Richard Burton in his Tony Award winning role as Arthur.  Burton & Andrews\'performances were partially preserved on tape for the Ed Sullivan Show (CBS). Fortunately, the musical\'s full audio recordings have survived and are awonderful testament to the brilliance of this Lerner & Loewe production.

By September 25, 1961, Burton made his final appearance in this production of \"Camelot\" and he left shortly thereafter for Rome so he could join with the 20th Century Fox production of \"Cleopatra\"... opening the door for William Squire to step into the role that Burton had originated. The move opened new doors for Burton as well... as \"Cleopatra\" marked the start of a romance with the film\'s leading actress, Elizabeth Taylor.

Having heard about Julie Andrews\' performance on the Ed Sullivan Show (March 19, 1961), Walt Disney was finally able to see Camelot on an upcoming business trip to New York.  He was hopingto find his \"Mary Poppins\", and upon meeting Andrews and husband TonyWalton backstage after the performance, they agreed that after the birth of their first child they would travel to Burbank for avisit of the Walt Disney Studios.

Soon after hearing the Sherman Brothers\' score and viewingthe Don DaGradi concept sketches, everyone involved knew that Julie Andrewswould fulfill Walt\'s highest and best expectations for what would become themagnum opus of his career: \"Mary Poppins.\"

The timeline for these events is as follows:

  • December 3, 1960; Camelot opens at the Majestic Theatre with Julie Andrews, Richard Burton and Robert Goulet in the lead roles.
  • March 19, 1961; The original cast of \"Camelot\" is featured on the Ed Sullivan Show. Word is quickly passed to Walt Disney that he might want to consider Julie Andrews for an upcoming film project.
  • September 25, 1961; Richard Burton leaves the show and travels to Rome to join the production of \"Cleopatra.\" William Squire was then offered the role of Arthur opposite Julie Andrews as Guenevere. For Burton, this would also mark the beginning of his romance with Elizabeth Taylor. (as such... Walt\'s often referenced attendance while Richard Burton performed the role of King Arthur... never happened)
  • January 29, 1962; The Playbill offered in this sale is issued at that night\'s performance. Only weeks later, Julie Andrews and  her husband Tony Walton learn that they are expecting their first child.
  • April 19 - 27, 1962; Walt Disney travels to New York for the Radio City Music Hall premiere of  his newest film \"Moon Pilot\" (with special stage production of \"Disneyland, U.S.A.\"). During his stay in New York he and Mrs. Disney attended a performance of \"Camelot.\" That night, Walt met briefly with Julie Andrews backstage to invite her to Burbank to discuss his production of \"Mary Poppins.\"  When she disclosed to Walt that she was expecting a child, Disney agreed to wait for the child be born and to schedule the visit as soon as was practical.
  • November 27, 1962; Emma Walton is born to Julie Andrews and husband Tony Walton.
  • January 5, 1963; \"Camelot\" closes on Broadway after 873 performances and 2 previews... clearing the way for Tony, Julie and Emma to finally visit the Walt Disney Studio.
  • August 27, 1964; \"Mary Poppins\" celebrates its World Premiere at Grauman\'s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood
  • April 5, 1965; Julie Andrew received the Academy Award for her leading performance and first feature film role in Walt Disney\'s \"Mary Poppins.\"

Playbill program is 6.5\" x 9\"; and in goodcondition; with minor wear, as shown.  It appears that a prior owner placed tape on the cover at some point, which has since fallen away.

Just a little bit of Hollywood history... celebrating one of the great Broadway productions of the twentieth century.
