Wonderful & Classic Original Napoleonic Wars 1811 Dated French Sapeur's Sappers Sword Eagle Head 1st Empire: Double Edged 1/3 with Spear Point Double Fullered Dragoon Type Blade Measures 28 Inches with a Total Length of 34, Brass Finely Made Hilt Grip is a Flowing Eagles Head - Hallmarks are visible above the Ricasso on the Blade and a Number 3 to the Reverse Ricasso with Forge Name (illegible) to the Spine and Date of 1811 Visible, No Scabbard -This sword is a fine example of the Sapeur's Sword of the Napoleonic Wars Era, featuring fine decorative elements including abrass pommel in the shape of a Eagles Head. Withsuch fine decoration and yet functional in its form the robust battlefield short sword could serve dual purposes and affirm the status of its owner.The sword is successor to the earlier European Cuttoe orHanger, both names originating from the form’s use as a European hunting weaponin the seventeenth century. The name “cuttoe” is an anglicization of the Frenchterm 'couteaux de chasse', meaning “hunting knife” In the late Seventeenth andearly Eighteenth Centuries, hangers became popular secondary weapons forInfantrymen in many of the Armies of Europe. The length of hanger blades istypically between 23 and 27 inches with this example being right at 28; obviously a little longer compared to its predecessor but still short for the Era when compared to the swords used by many Officers in the Army of France.
