DESCRIPTION
Wonderfully detailed traditional Hopi kachina (katsina) of Wuyak Kuita,who is a guard during ceremonies and dances, enforcing good behavior. These kachinas are particularly important in the winter Bean Dance, known as Powamuya. This example is very well detailed, in dancing pose, a carved bell, a Broadface mask with wooden feathers, and wooden yucca whips in each hand. Carved from the root of a cottonwood tree. Probably First Mesa. Beautifully painted in minute detail. Signed on the base "WUYAK-KUITA / GUARD / HOPI KACHINA" with an indistinct signature of the maker.
CONDITION
Overall very good. Missing a tip from one horn, a tiny tip from one feather, and a minute hairline in the headdress (all visible in the images). A LARGE AND BEAUTIFULLY DECORATED NATIVE AMERICAN KACHINA FIGURE.
