Original publisher's blind-stamped cloth with elaborate gilt lettering and embellishments on spine, profusely illustrated with engraved frontispiece & 40 pages of contemporary B&W early printed & newspaper full-page engravings (often double-spreads with multiple images), xiv, [xv-xvi] + 676 pages. SCARCE copiously illustrated Very contemporary overview of the great Chicago Vre of 1871 and others. Printed in New York City. Good copy with all dramatic illustrations present and in good condition. Map mostly torn from before the title page. Heavily rubbed and faded with uniform age-toning, occasional light foxing, & small tears on the edges of some pages. Spines are frayed at top & bottom. Outside spine hinges have a much earlier partial retoration. Rev. Edgar Johnson Goodspeed, D.D. (1833-1881) became the prominent Baptist pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Chicago in 1864-76, after which he was forced to resign due to asthma. He is mentioned in the Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature; and in No. 4. Check List of Chicago Ante-Fire Imprints, #941, which notes the publication of Goodspeed's "Funeral discourse on the death of Abraham Lincoln," delivered at Second Baptist Church. His namesake and very scholarly son became a prominent professor at the University of Chicago. First Edition. [sold only by subscription].
