AN ORIGINAL, VERY WELL PRESERVEDCIVIL WAR US FEDERAL CAVALRY GIRTH OR CINCH FOR THE US 1859 McCLELLAN SADDLE.
IT ISCOMPLETE AND UNMOLESTED FOR MORE THAN 150 YEARS.
IT IS THE REGULATION 1859 McCLELLAN SADDLE GIRTH ISSUED TO ALL CAVALRYTROOPERS DURING THE CIVIL WAR FOR ALL McCLELLAN SADDLE. ITCONTINUED TO BEIN SERVICE DURING THE EARLY INDIAN WARS UNTIL 1872 WHEN A NEW DESIGN WAS ADOPTED.
THE LEATHER IS DRY WITHSURFACE CRAZING AND FINISH LOSSTO BE EXPECTED ON LEATHER THIS OLD. THE LEATHER COLOR IS BLACK AS IT SHOULD BE. THE STITCHING IS COMPLETE AND APPEAR SOUND BUT I CERTAINLY WOULD ADVISE NOT TO TUG ON THE LEATHER PARTS TO TEST IT. THE WOOL WEB GIRTH HAS DETERIORATED AS SHOW IN MY PICTURES ON ONE SIDE.
NOTE ALSO THAT THE BILLET KEEPERS ARE SOMEWHAT FLAT AND STIFF AND I WOULD RECOMMEND NOT TO ATTEMPT TO PUSH THROUGH LEATHER STRAPS.
THE IRON HARDWAREIS LIGHTLYRUSTED BUT CAN BE MOVED WITH MUCH OF THE FINISH REMAINING.
THE WOLLEN CLOTH HAS A FEW SNAGS AND ONE MORE MAJOR ONE. IT IS NOT FRAGILE TO HANDLE. THE LARGEST ONE IS SHOWN UP CLOSE IN MY PICTURES. THERE IS SOME THREAD DISCOLORATION AND FADING FROM AGE IN SOME OF THE THREAD WHICH IS ALSO SHOWN UP CLOSE.
MAKER STAMPED ON ONE SIDE \"HOOVER CALHOUN NEW YORK\".
A GREAT AND ANYMORE SELDOM FOUND ADDITION TO A CIVIL WAR CAVALRY DISPLAY. IT WILL DISPLAY WELL IN YOUR COLLECTION.
