For your consideration is a pristine all-original 1902 Edison Model A Standard 2-minute cylinder phonograph outfit, pretty much as it was originally advertised 122 years ago: with original all brass horn, recorder and box, chip brush for recorder shavings, shaving box, period oil can, and original cast iron crank. This phonograph was produced at the tail end of the brown wax era, brown wax being a cylinder medium which catered to home recording. If you have been seeking a near-silent running Edison phonograph, especially for brown wax recording experimentation, look no further- here's your opportunity to step back in time, 122 years.
This phonograph is very close to factory fresh, with lustrous original shellac finish and a crisp original (and honest) decal: no infilling here.
The top works retains original factory black enamel ( asphaltum) paint job, along with fragile gilt detailing.
The factory nickel plating is like new and even the screw heads have factory blueing.
You will find the motor in this Standard to be about as well preserved as they come. It is near-silent and strong enough to power through a couple 2-minute cylinders with a full winding of the spring barrel. The original factory drive belt is still with the machine, however split. It's a relic that you'll want to archive. The current leather drive belt is the best on the market, pioneered by master phonograph technician, Wyatt Markus.
Included with this phonograph is its original winged Model B, 2-minute reproducer, an improvement over the earlier Automatic reproducer and new for the 1902 crop of phonographs. The Model B reproducer still utilized a ball stylus, like the Automatic, which is the safest stylus to use for Brown Wax recordings, but also appropriate for Black Wax and celluloid (plastic) cylinders. The reproducer retains its original glass diaphragm and has been rebuilt with fresh gaskets and tuned for optimal performance.
Additionally, the phonograph retains the original partner to the Model B, the "new style" 2-minute brown wax recorder. New style meaning an improvement over the Automatic recorder. This recorder operates beautifully, as you will discover, and retains not only a superb original sapphire recording stylus, but also its original glass recording diaphragm ( far thinner than the reproducer glass). Recorder has its original pasteboard storage box and cotton batting. This box is specific to early winged "new style" recorders. The original "chip" brush included to dust away brown wax shavings during and after recording.
The machine has its original brown wax shaving box, located on the back of the carriage arm, minus shaving edge, to prevent accidental shaving. It is not recommended to ever attempt shaving with this attachment due to the laborious nature of shaving on this machine and to be gentle on the motor.
Also included is the fine period all brass horn with a stellar 100+ year old patina.
With the machine are 3 cylinders: one Edison brown wax blank, shaved and ready to record, one Columbia brown wax cylinder, circa 1902, and finally one immaculate Edison Black Wax commercial cylinder from about 1905, featured in the accompanying video. This machine will safely play all standard-sized 2-minute cylinders.
I'm happy to include setup and operating instructions with this machine and will also offer an instruction video on operation and the recording process if so desired.
