Item Description
Canopic jars
Canopic jars were containers used by the ancient Egyptians during the mummification process to store and preserve the viscera (internal organs) of the deceased for the afterlife. They were an important part of the elaborate burial rituals practiced by the Egyptians, who believed that preserving the body and its organs was essential for the deceased to be reborn in the next life.
They were typically made from limestone, alabaster, granite, or pottery. They were always used in sets of four, each jar corresponding to a specific organ:The baboon-headed jar contained the lungs, protected by the god Hapy. The jackal-headed jar contained the stomach, protected by the god Duamutef. The human-headed jar contained the liver, protected by the god Imsety. The falcon-headed jar contained the intestines, protected by the god Qebehsenuef. The lids of the jars were often decorated with the heads of the four protective deities, or with masks representing them. The bodies of the jars were sometimes decorated with religious scenes or inscriptions.Evolution: The design and use of canopic jars evolved over time. In the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2181 BCE), they were plain and undecorated. In the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 BCE), they began to be decorated with human heads. In the New Kingdom (c. 1570–1069 BCE), the lids took on the forms of the four sons of Horus, and the jars were often elaborately decorated.By the Late Period (c. 664–332 BCE), the practice of removing and storing the organs had largely fallen out of favor, and canopic jars were often used symbolically, containing linen packages rather than actual organs.Canopic jars are fascinating objects that offer a glimpse into the ancient Egyptian beliefs about death and the afterlife. They are also beautiful works of art, and their intricate designs and symbolism continue to captivate us today.
