This is an authentic polychromed Santo Domingo PuebloNative American made wood plate from the early 20th century!One finds pottery fairly easily, but wood plates- almost never!
This dates to after the Santo Domingo Pueblo were contactedby American traders & travelers after 1880. The influence led toan appearance of Santo Domingo geometric designs on wood
as well as pottery! Travelers of the railways ended upin Santo Domingo in 1910-20. Other native areas were stillout of reach. The Pueblo sold wares to travelers during
this period & artisans experimented with pieces designedto appeal to their buyers - in this case a wood plate!
This piece has been part of a local collector\'sSouthwestern Indian Art Collection for overfour decades and this is its first time makingan appearance in the marketplace.
This very rare plate is in fine vintage conditionwith amazing marks of usage, staining etc.The wood has cracked with age all over theplace and it presents beautifully!
