Rare 1880's Frary & Sons Hobo Pocketknife - All Original:
$500.00

Rare 1880's Frary & Sons Hobo Pocketknife - All Original. Dimensions: 3 1/4 inch main blade, 11 inches long overall when unfolded. When both utensils are pulled apart, the knife is 7 1/4 inches long and the fork is 7 inches long. Very Good Condition for something this old.
James D. Frary was in the cutlery business starting in about 1861. He was also the president of L.F. & C. for a couple of years then started the Frary Cutlery Co. They made mass-produced cast pot metal handle boy`s knives mostly. In 1881 he formed the company Frary & Son. Many of the knives are tang stamped "A1", this was their trademark. By all accounts, the business closed up in 1884. So finding knives with this tang stamp is very rare. This knife was patented in 1882 and is an ingenious take-apart Hobo knife. Most take-apart knives of the era were too bulky to carry in the pocket. The ones with the folding spoon were next to impossible to carry in your pocket comfortably. This knife however can be easily carried. If you just need to use the cutting blade you open it just like any other folding knife. If you just want to use the fork, fold it out as well. But if you want to use both at the same time, just pull in opposite directions on each bolster. The two pieces will slide apart. The handles are hollow nickel-plated sheet brass that have an ornate design on each side. They were only made for 2 years 1882-84 and are extremely rare.We are a Top Rated Plus seller and stand behind every item we sell.
