The Egyptian Mona Lisa

The painting of Meidum geese, famous as theEgyptian Mona Lisa, is part of a scene of bird netting plastered in the mastaba of Nefer Maat and his wife Etet. Nefermaat is the son of the Egyptian king Snefru, the first king of the Fourth Dynasty. The mastaba was discovered by the Egyptologist Luigi Vassali in 1871 and studied by Flinders Petrie.

The full scene depicts six geese (a shrouded goose, large white-fronted and red-breasted geese, none of which are native to modern Egypt). Three on the left and three on the right. Each group of three geese consists of one goose feeding on the grass shown with its head down, and two geese with their heads held high

Soft green plants with red flowers evoke the landscape of pond shores. The two birds on the left are red-breasted geese, close to real geese. The quality of its detail, color and texture, as well as its exceptional state of preservation, has led it to be compared to Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
