Rare Henry Sperry Pre-Civil War Tower Clock:
$11400.00

This is a Henry Sperry HSC Model 1 tower clock circa 1851 as described on page 143 in the book \"Early American Tower Clocks\" by Frederick Shelley. The only other known clock of this model by Henry Sperry is located in a church on Rutgers Street in New York City. The New York City clock is said to be the oldest wound clock in the city and is still keeping time. This clock has a deadbeat pinwheel escapement in a cast iron frame. It is an eight day time and strike movement. Pictured on the front of the clock is what appears to be a pilot dial but it is not the original pilot dial but just a paper cutout pasted on to a round piece of galvanized steel sheet just to show the location of where a pilot dial might be mounted on the frame. Motion works for the pilot dial appear to be intact behind this paper dial. Also pictured is a short section of the pendulum rod which has a very interesting history. You will note, in the photo, that a sliver of wood was knocked out of the pendulum rod. I was told the missing part of the rod was knocked out by a civil war musket ball. The pendulum rod is very solid and was used for many years after the civil war. This clock is very complete and has four sets of hour and minute hands, a four way differential and four sets of motion works with four original driving rods. The clock appears to have had some restoration work done to it and a has relatively recent coat of green paint. All in all this is a very complete clock that should function properly. It is a fine and rare example of pre-civil war American craftsmanship that is ready to continue keeping time for many years to come. This clock can be picked up at my ranch in Colorado.
