These sculptures are referred to as “alebrijes.”
Alebrijes are hand carved and painted wooden figures hailing from the state of Oaxaca in the south of Mexico.
The word “Alebrijes” came from a dream that Pedro Linares Lopez, a folk artist in Mexico City, had in 1936. The dream inspired Linares to begin creating the fantastic animals and natural objects from his dream, all of which had shouted the word “alebrijes” in his dream.
Alebrijes figures are generally carved from the wood of the local Copal tree, and adeptly decorated with acrylic paints. Often entire families work together to carve and paint the figures, with each member contributing a different skill.
Overall, alebrijes celebrate and honor the magic of creativity, and the beauty of a more ethereal and spiritual world. Alebrijes are special because no two are ever alike. Every artisan who designs one gives the spiritual animal its own unique traits and personality.
“Alebrijes” were featured in the 2017 Pixar movie called Coco.
