Cabinet card of a photographer standing outdoors with his equipment. Imprint of V. Stirewalt, Davidson, NC. Circa 1890. Believed to be a self-portrait of Valentine Stirewalt, a longtime resident of Davidson.
Stirewalt was born in 1827 and worked in a variety of trades until his death in 1907. After his flour mill burnt to the ground in the 1860s, Stirewalt worked as a mechanic and received at least two patents for his inventions. In the 1900 census he is recorded as a photographer.
Interestingly, the camera on the tripod appears to be of home-made construction. It is likely that Stirewalt only owned a single camera and so cleverly built a mock one for the occasion.
Some soiling and foxing.
