Spode Cup Antique Porcelain Early C1810 Transfer Bat Printed Orphan 276 & 277:
$55.00

I have three of these cups for sale in the samepattern but with two different printed scenes from the Notable Buildings series of Spode bat prints. If you have saucers in the sameseries but no cups, you can make up a complete set. Or let me know and I willbuy your matching Spode saucers. Two cups have a mansion in the center and two tall coniferson the side, and one cup has a mansion in the center with a fisherman at thelake in the foreground. The conifers print is number 276 in Drakard andHoldway’s book on the Spode prints, and the fisherman print is number 277.Their comments are: “This pair of early prints, used on the Hestor Saveryservice, probably for the reason of their smaller size, are found on the laterPembroke shapes as well as on earlier wares. The origin of 276 has not beenfound, but 277 is a view of West Wycombe Park, Buckinghamshire. . . . Spode’sengraver has taken very considerable liberties with the original [engraving],which was published in 1793, but sufficient is left to justify the continueduse of the name for the view.” The Hestor Savery service dates to 1803, sothese two prints were in use on Spode wares by that date. On page 168 of theirbook (and on the cover) they show the gilding pattern and call it “the mostexuberantly gilded” of all the gilding patterns that occur on Spode's bat-printed wares. You can buy one cup or as many as three, your option. After choosing the number you want and buying, email me describing which scenes you want. They are all in nice condition, with no chips, very minor gilding wear. The only damage isthat one of the mansion/conifer cups has a vertical hairline (shown close-up in the last photo)that is nearly invisible. So two are good and the third has damage. I started with five of these and sold two so that an er could match up cups with his two orphan saucers. is great for that kind of thing. Ref T573
