A gorgeousantique silver plate Elkington inkwell in Neoclassical design, with its originalglass ink pot.This beautiful piece measures about 7.5\" in diameter andstands about 1.5\" high.
The inkwell is stamped on the bottom with theElkington silver marks used 1856-1885. The \"N\" denotes that it wasmade in 1874. It is identified as pattern 941.
Glass ink pot fitssnugly in the silver inkwell. It would have to be broken to remove it, so I know it is original to the piece.
This inkwell is embossed with scenes of gods,goddesses, warriors, flowers, standardsand mythical creatures. It is on araised, almost 1\" base. The lid hinge issuperb condition and operatessmoothly and securely. The silverplate is in very good shape, and only shows some copper underneath primarilyon the lid.Please see pictures. There are no dents or repairs, and is in fantastic conditionfor a piece close to 150 years old!
Elkington & Co. is one of the mostimportant names in English silver and certainly the most important in silverplate. According to the website Silverplate.it, it began in Birmingham as acompany of silversmiths in 1836, and experimented with gilding techniques. By1838it had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal onto the surface of another. Elkington was appointed to design pieces for QueenVictoria, King Edward VI, King George V,King Edward VIII and King George VI.
