The final and most severe of the ten persecutions faced by the early Church was instigated by Diocletian, who held a relatively extended and prosperous rule in the late third century. Despite the period being famously known as the Diocletianic Persecution, Christianity experienced tolerance for most of Diocletian's reign, witnessing a surge in new converts to the faith.
