Postcard Photo of the Hollywood Canteen, signed on verso. Cardwell has added a handwritten note.
Postcard Photograph signed: \"Virginia Weidler\", \"Jimmy Cardwell/(No relation to the/Cardwells of Indiana)/Best always to/you Shorty\", \"Minnie Berry\", \"Harry Von Zell\",
3½x5½. Reproduced b/w photo on front of a line of people waiting for admission to the Hollywood Canteen. VIRGINIA WEIDLER (1927-1968) was a child star of the late 1930s and early 1940s, working at Paramount and then MGM. Her first credited role was in Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch (1934). Her major roles included The Women (1939), The Philadelphia Story (1940) and Babes on Broadway (with Judy Garland, 1941). She made her final film, Best Foot Forward, in 1943, and then retired at age 17, shunning publicity thereafter. JAMES \"JIMMY\" CARDWLL (1921-1954) made a promising film debut in The Sullivans (1944), and was signed to a 7-year contract by Twentieth Century-Fox. Despite strong performances in A Walk in the Sun (1945) and He Walked by Night (1948), he soon found himself consigned to B movies. His one starring role, the 1949 turkey Daughter of the Jungle, didn\'t help. Assigned no-credit parts in some later films, and unable to find steady work in television, Cardwell took his own life at the age of 32. HARRY VON ZELL (1906-1981) was a vocalist with Charlie Barnet\'s orchestra before finding his niche as an announcer. Through the 1930s and forties he was a CBS staff announcer, working with Fred Allen, Eddie Cantor, Eddy Duchin, Ed Wynn and others. In the early 1950s he was announcer for The Burns and Allen Show, \"fired\" weekly by George Burns for complicity in Gracie Allen\'s schemes. He was in demand for commercials, and can still be seen late night on the Golf Channel as announcer for the old Celebrity Golf series. The Hollywood Canteen (1942-1945), staffed by Hollywood celebrities, offered free food, dancing and entertainment to those with an \"admission ticket\": their uniform. No information is presently available on Minnie Berry. Lightly toned. Corners creased. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise fine condition.See more material from these signers:VIRGINIA WEIDLER MINNIE BERRY JAMES CARDWELL HARRY VON ZELL See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (12,502) category.
