This carved miniature replica of a Brown Pelican was created over a period of about a year by
Thibodaux, Louisiana carver Lane Brigham. The decision not to paint the piece was made in an
effort to show the delicate carving and burn lines of the bird, feather groups and creosote pilings
with their age from years of weathering. The eyes are glass and the color is correct for this
species. After several years of photographing pelicans close up at a landing near Cocodrie,
Louisiana the carver reasoned that the most reasonable approach to a re-creation would be a
miniature given the massive size of a grown bird. A careful observer might notice the bony
structure of the feet and angle of the claws as they grip the piling. Nails are from a sculpting
compound baked in an oven and then carved and covered in sealer. His pouch is leathery in real
life and feathers of the main body are small and have a smooth appearance as depicted in the
carving. This miniature won Best of Show in the Novice Division of Decorative Miniature
Feathered Wildlife in 2004. That venue is known as the Louisiana Wildfowl Carvers and
Collectors Guild and is held in New Orleans. Plaque for said award will be included in the sale price.
