A little bit of history about this Amate Folk Art:
Amate, from the Nahuatl (NA-watl) word Amatl (paper), is a type of parchmentpaper used today for crafts by artisans in Mexico. It is manufactured from the bark of various trees, mainly fig and mulberry trees.
The use of Amate has its origin in pre-Hispanic times. During the Mexica Empire, important events and legal documents where registered and written on Amate parchment.
By the end of the 1950s the Nahua Indians of the Balsas region renewed the ancient tradition of Amate making and painted on them. In the State of Guerrero where this featured Amate is from, artisans brightly decorate the Amate with beautiful scenes depicting wildlife, flowers, harvest, and ceremonial customs.
