Magnificent hand made art piece
Shell Eyes, Hand Painted
16\" long from tail to snout, 9.5\" high, 5.5\" wide
Excellent vintage condition, very old and very delicate as it is hand made from woven grass and jute. No damage to woven material, no holes, no damage to underlying bent wood frame. Some stray ends of the jute here and there, normal as expected for age, not damage and not frayed or unraveling.
Completely hand made African folk art piecerepresenting a warthog. He is built upon a hand constructed bent wood frame over which 2 different types of jute/ sea grass has been hand woven.Amazing feeling comes across from this piece- he has an open, rounded lower lip which gives him a realistic slotfor his mouth- small rounded ears, and 2cowrie shell eyes which are carefully \'sewn\' on with threaded and woven jute. Great tail with jute \'hairs\' on the tip.Underbelly is a finer weave of a smaller diameter jute. Wood frame gives him 4 sturdy legs- he is free standing. Wood frame also gives him 2 wooden nostrils!
Hand painted with natural clay and vegetable dyes in shades of brown, red, and white, in a horizontal stripe pattern along his sides and down his back. Underside has a crisscross pattern of deep blood red.
This style of weaving andartwork is specifically attributed to the West African Dogon people of Mali

I purchased this at an Estate sale of an elderlylady that traveled the world and collected items from around the globe in her 86 years. Her family had no idea what this was or when it was acquired. It seemedto pre-date all of them.
