Up for your consideration is a vintage 1956 RELPO 6359 ceramic planter: a Happy Birthday Cake Bakery Chef, presenting a lovely 3 layer frosted cake with a birthday candle on top. "Happy Birthday" is written in blue on his white apron.
A LITTLE HISTORY: 'Relpo', short for Reliable Glassware & Pottery Co., was the sales division of Samson Import Co, a Chicago importer. Samson Imports was founded by Samuel Krivit in 1933 and Relpo was started by his son, Jerome. The Krivits bought ceramics from Japan after WW2, including figurine planters, and marketed them to the American consumers.
FEATURES:
* Pastel colors like blue and pink were all the rage at the time
* This Jolly Bakery Chef wears a classic white uniform with blue highlights and a Birthday greeting written in blue on his apron. He sports blue plaid pants and black shoes
* The planter he is leaning on is pink
* On the bottom the mold number 'Relpo 6359' is incised in a scroll box, with the original gold and blue label "Relpo Chicago. Ill. Made in Japan"
* High gloss glaze protects him
