This rare finely crafted Hutschenreuther porcelain figurine depicts the famous "Bremen Town Musicians”.
The figurine is based on the Brothers Grimm folktale that was published in Grimms' Fairy Tales in 1819. It tells the story of four aging domestic animals, who after a lifetime of hard work are neglected and mistreated by their former masters. According to the story, a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster escaped from the farmer and journeyed to Bremen in search of a better life as musicians.
This whimsical figuring is in pristine condition. I have personally owned this piece myself for 50 years. It was given to me by my grandmother.
On a side note:
A bronze statue created by Gerhard Marcks in 1953 stands in the heart of Bremen as a tribute to the popular fairytale by the Brothers Grimm.
The statue stands two metres tall as is popular with locals and visitors alike. It is said that rubbing the donkeys legs will bring good luck!
The story of the “Bremen Town Musicians” imparts a valuable lesson in resilience and refusing to stay down when others put you down.
