During World War II (WWII or WW2) on June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” The operation involved more than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft. By that day’s end, the Allies gained a significant foot-hold in Europe. The front side of the coin represents the four flags of the main Allied Forces that landed in Normandy on June 6th, 1944 (the American, British, Free French and Canadian flag). The reverse puts forward the scene of the U-boats arriving with land forces and the sky dotted with paratroopers and small planes representing airborne operations.
