Themilitary history of the United Kingdom in World War IIcovers theSecond World Waragainst theAxis powers, starting on 3 September 1939 with thedeclaration of war by the United KingdomandFrance, followed bythe UK\'sDominions,Crown coloniesandprotectoratesonNazi Germanyin response to theinvasion of Polandby Germany. There was little, however, the Anglo-French alliance could do or did do to help Poland. ThePhoney Warculminated in April 1940 with theGerman invasion of Denmark and Norway.Winston Churchill became prime ministerandhead of a coalition governmentin May 1940. The defeat of other European countries followed –Belgium, the Netherlands,LuxembourgandFrance– alongside theBritish Expeditionary Forcewhich led to theDunkirk evacuationin June 1940.

Britain and its Empire continued the waragainst Germany. Churchill engaged industry, scientists and engineers to advise and support the government and the military in the prosecution of the war effort. Germany\'splanned invasion of the UKwas averted by theRoyal Air Forcedenying theLuftwaffeair superiority in theBattle of Britain, and by its marked inferiority in naval power. Subsequently, urban areas in Britain suffered heavy bombing duringthe Blitzin late 1940 and early 1941. TheRoyal Navysought toblockade Germanyand protect merchant ships in theBattle of the Atlantic. TheArmycounter-attacked in theMediterranean and Middle East, including theNorth-AfricanandEast-African campaigns, andin the Balkans.

The United Kingdom and allied countries signed theDeclaration of St James\'s Palacein June 1941 committing to no separate peace with Germany and setting out principles to serve as the basis of a future peace. Churchill agreed analliance with the Soviet Unionin July and began sending supplies to the USSR. By August, Churchill and American PresidentFranklin Roosevelthad drafted theAtlantic Charterto define goals for the post-war world. In December, theEmpire of Japanattacked British and American holdings with near-simultaneousoffensives against Southeast Asia and the Central Pacificincluding anattack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor. Britain and America declared war on Japan, opening thePacific War. TheGrand Allianceof the United Kingdom, the United States and the Soviet Union was formed and Britain and America agreed aEurope firstgrand strategy for the war. TheDeclaration by United Nationsdrafted by Roosevelt and Churchill in Washington in December 1941 formalised theAllies of World War II. The UK, the US and their Allies suffered many disastrous defeats in the Asia-Pacific war during the first six months of 1942. TheEastern Frontbetween the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany became the largest theatre of war ever to take place.

There were eventual hard-fought victories in 1943 in the North-African campaign, led by GeneralBernard Montgomery, and in the subsequentItalian campaign. British forces played major roles in the production ofUltrasignals intelligence, thestrategic bombingof Germany, and theNormandy landingsof June 1944. Theliberation of Europefollowed on 8 May 1945, achieved by the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom and other Allied countries. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign of the War.

The Pacific War, fought primarily betweenChina, the United States and Japan, was geographically the largest theater of the war. In theSouth-East Asian theatre, the BritishEastern Fleetconducted strikes in theIndian Ocean. The British Army led theBurma campaignto drive Japan out of the British colony. Involving a million troops at its peak, drawn primarily fromBritish India, the campaign was finally successful in mid-1945. TheBritish Pacific Fleettook part in theBattle of Okinawaand the final naval strikes on Japan. British scientistscontributed to the Manhattan Projectto design a nuclear weapon. The decision to use these weapons was made by the Anglo-AmericanCombined Policy Committeeand led to thesurrender of Japan, which was announced on 15 August 1945 and signed on 2 September 1945.
