$49.99

Two (2) demitasse cups from the Squantum Club nearRiverside in East Providence, Rhode Island, made by the Maddock Pottery Companyof Trenton, New Jersey, circa 1900s to 1920s. The two small handled cupsfeature a design printed in blue with the head of a Native American set withina circle in front of arrows and a quiver. Two blue stripes circle the top edge, and there’s one strip at bottom. The handle also has a blue stripe on the edge. This is the logo used by the Squantum Club. Charted in 1872, the Squantum Clubwas established by prominent residents of the Providence and was a populardestination in the summer months. The two cups were both made by Maddock, butthey have different marks on the bottom. One features an M above CHINA with Lbelow—a mark used by the company from the 1890s to 1911. The other one has amark featuring a shield with an S in it and CHINA below set inside a wreath andthe words Lamberton and Scammell above and below. This is the company mark usedfrom 1928 to 1930. The demitasse cups each measure about 2 ¼” tall and are 2 ½”in diameter at the top rim. They are in only good condition with light wear andsoiling. Each one has a vertical hairline crack—the earlier one is cracked bythe handle, and the other is cracked on the backside. That cup also has a smallchip on the top rim at front. A nice pair of early topmarked restaurant chinademitasse cups and a fun bit of Squantum Association history!
