Offered for sale is #2045 the only pottery or stoneware bottle produced by The National Brewery. The National Brewery in Baltimore operated from 1886-1899 before being sold to the Maryland Brewery and then GBS. This is an iconic bottle that transcends Baltimore and collectable bottles. This stoneware was produced in 1892 maybe for a year or two. Why use a stoneware bottle when National was only using glass before then? Who knows. While is does not seem that this idea lasted very long it left us with an iconic stoneware bottle in high demand. With the small lip treatment it most likely used a cork with a wire tying to hold it in place. One of only 5 Baltimore Beers that actually exclaim that they are a Lager Beer.
This stoneware version displays well with nice mottled color from aging. The stenciling is good and legible with great glaze crazing throughout the bottle. Note there is two chips on the lip, lost likely from an ice pick when trying to dig out the cork.
