Although Dunhill already contolled Hardcastle's 51%, we use to write "pre-Dunhill" when referring to the last period of the Family Era (1946-1967), because the making of pipes during that period continued to be done with the methods and under the supervision of the Hardcastle family. In 1967 Dunhill took over the 100% of the company and downgraded it to something like Dunhill 2nds.
Here we have an unsmoked new-old-stock pipe from a rare series of the Family Era (as indicated from the stamps), which is not mentioned not even inour beloved Pipedia.A straight Dublin with medium size bowl (similar to something between Dunhill's Group 3 and Group 4 in size) for the Royal Bruyere series.
This over 59 years old pipe is without faults. Excellent grains and a special and rare stamp on the base of the shank : "P.H.D.". From the multitude of Hardcastle pipes that have passed through our hands it is the first time that we encounter such stamp.
