This is a 10.5LB natural Canada ammonite fossil with ammolite gem material in a rock matrix. The fossil originates from the Bearpaw shale formation in Alberta Canada, is estimated to be 75 million years old and is one of therarest and most desirable species,Placenticeras intercalare,which displays distinctive ‘horns’ that spiral along the surface of the ammonite fossil. These formations allow for unique and truly special surface texturing that is unlike the smooth, flat texture of other Canadian ammonite species.This piece showcases the beauty and history of ancient sea creatures.The ammonite measures approximately 9”in diameter. It has excellent shape including two rows of very prominent tubercles. The tubercles don’t stick out very far but they are highly visible and you feel themwhen you rub your finger on the face of this ammonite. It also has very pronouncedand intricatedecoration along the venter(outer edge).This specimen has very bright reds, oranges, greens and golds throughout and there is a very tiny touch of blue on the ammonite. There is a bit of colour on the matrix outside the living chamber and it displays blue here.
