1500s Illuminated Medieval Manuscript Leaf Gregorian Chant on Vellum:
$699.99

We have for sale a very large double sided 22 1/2 x 31 inch beautiful1500s Illuminated Medieval Manuscript Leaf from a large book of Gregorian Chants. The paper is vellum as you can see it is in fairly good shape for its age but does have some tears at the bottom as you can see so will need some loving repair work. The hand drawn and colored illumination to me is the most beautiful part of this document and really makes it pop. The information I got below is what information I have received from Ai so take it as you will. I do hope to find a good home for this manuscript so it can be repaired and well taken care of. The manuscript was so large I had to use magnets to hold it flat to take photos, so the is what you see in the photos in the corners. The document will come rolled and safely protected. This would make an amazing addition to any collection. All offers welcome!
  • The Illumination Style: The large initial "O" in the top left corner features a colorful acanthus leaf and floral design set against a gold-painted background. The layout and specific style of this decorative border are highly characteristic of Mediterranean (especially Spanish or Italian) choir book workshops operating from the mid-1500s.
  • The Script: The text—featuring lines like "runt occuli mei in..." and "quia elongatus est a me qui"—is written in a large, rounded Gothic script (frequently referred to as Rotunda), which was the dominant style for large choirbooks in Southern Europe during this era.
  • This frontside: contains a famous Latin sorrowful chant traditionally sung during Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter). [1]The text is from a liturgical piece called "Caligaverunt oculi mei". It is part of the Tenebrae Responsories, which are mournful evening services where candles are gradually extinguished, leaving the church in complete darkness. The text itself adapts a sorrowful lament from the biblical Book of Job (Job 16:17)
  • My eyes have grown dim
    from my weeping,
for he is far from me
    who [comforted me]
  • The backside: This is exactly the continuation of the Holy Week chant! This side completes the thought from the front page and goes into a powerful, emotional plea.
  • ...comforted
    me. See, all
you people, if there be any
    sorrow like
    unto my sorrow.
