Titled Frisiae Dominium vernacule Friesland, verdeeld in de Hoofd-deelen van Oostergoo, Westergoo en Sevenwolden, the map divides Friesland into the historic territories of Oostergo, Westergo, and Zevenwouden. Its numerous traditional jurisdictions, known as grietenijen, are carefully delineated and individually identified.
Based upon the landmark regional surveys of Bernardus Schotanus à Sterringa, the map presents an extraordinary record of Friesland at the beginning of the eighteenth century. It locates Leeuwarden, Sneek, Harlingen, Franeker, Dokkum, and hundreds of smaller communities, together with churches, roads, canals, lakes, forests, estates, dikes, reclaimed lands, and coastal shoals.
An inset at upper left, titled Kaart van de Friesse Eilanden met de omliggende Zee-Plaaten, depicts the Frisian Islands of Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog, along with the hazardous channels and shallows of the North Sea coast.
The handsome title cartouche is surmounted by the arms of Friesland. At lower left is a finely engraved representation of the Stenen Man, the historic memorial near Harlingen associated with Caspar de Robles and the reconstruction of Friesland’s sea defenses.
This example is especially desirable for its extensive early hand coloring. Broad washes of rose, green, yellow, and blue distinguish the principal districts and neighboring territories, while towns, boundaries, waterways, and coastal features are individually highlighted. The result is considerably more decorative than examples retaining only outline color.

Condition: Strong, detailed engraved impression with extensive and attractive surviving color. General age toning, scattered foxing, surface soiling, and localized yellow-brown staining, particularly in the upper-left inset and upper-right portion. Several marginal tears are present, including a longer closed tear extending inward from the upper-right edge. Additional creasing and handling wear consistent with age. Substantially complete with generally good margins.
