Original handwritten German manuscript receipt dated December 10, 1766.
The document acknowledges receipt of four Carolina gold coins and one French Shield Doubloon sent from Pennsylvania by cousin John Wister.
The receipt is signed by Francesca Wister and Maria Josepha Wilthein (born Wister).
An English translation was written on the front many decades later. A typed note attached to the reverse explains that the earlier translation had faded and that a new translation was prepared on May 4, 1935.
The document remains housed in an older black wood frame with glass. The frame shows age, wear, and small chips and is included for display and preservation.
This is an exceptional piece connecting colonial Pennsylvania, eighteenth-century Germany, family history, and early international commerce.
The writing has faded on the front bottom in the first translation. The frame is a thin brown frame with scratches on it, and there appear to be some scratches on the glass.
The frame measures 9 1/2 inches from top to bottom and 5 1/2 inches wide.
