Original colonial Connecticut military commission dated October 18, 1774, appointing Joseph Rockwell Captain of the Company or Trainband in Colebrook within Connecticut’s 18th Regiment.
Historical records identify Rockwell as Colebrook’s second settler and confirm that he continued commanding the local militia during the American Revolutionary War until his death on July 12, 1776. He was succeeded by his younger brother Samuel.
Document with handwritten details, signed by Governor Jonathan Trumbull Sr. and Colonial Secretary George Wyllys. Retains its original applied red colonial seal. Approximately 12\" × 8.5\".
