Signed letter (7 1/4" x 9") Single page signed letter on yellow lined paper with an embossed stamp in the top left corner, and uniquely, all edges of the page appear to have been gilted. Good condition. The edge of the paper is very clean, with only minor crumpling. The lefthand side has been ripped from a book or larger sheet of paper. The page has been folded into twelfths with some soiling and minor water damage along the seams. Ink has bled through the page somewhat.
In this April 1833 letter from Lincoln County, North Carolina, U.S. Representative Henry W. Connor writes to Francis Preston Blair, editor of the Washington Globe, to formally affirm his political loyalty and clarify his voting record during a period of intense Jacksonian patronage. Connor explicitly confirms that he voted for the administration’s choice for Public Printer on every ballot and refutes claims published by the National Intelligencer suggesting he was one of four defectors. By distancing himself from opposition figures like Duff Green and characterizing the editors of the Intelligencer as "Eds. & Politicians," the correspondence illustrates the 19th-century reliance on government printing contracts as a vital mechanism for maintaining party discipline and centralizing political media. This manuscript offers a vital, unvarnished look into the operations of the Second Party System and the inner workings of the early Washington press machine.
