C. MACINTOSH JR – AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) Antermony, Lennoxtown, “Glasg.”, 2 January 1847 Royal Society / Lord Northampton / Sir John Moore autograph reference

DESCRIPTION: A neatly written and content‑rich autograph letter signed by C. Macintosh Jr. (1806–1869) of Antermony, son of the celebrated chemist and inventor Charles Macintosh FRS. Written from the family estate at Lennoxtown, the letter discusses Lord Northampton and the Royal Society, noting that the address in question was prepared by the Committee. Macintosh adds that he is able to enclose an autograph of Sir John Moore, the celebrated Glasgow-born general (the enclosure no longer present).

The letter is addressed to an unidentified Meynell, very tentatively attributable to a member of the mid‑19th‑century antiquarian or autograph‑collecting Meynell circle. Seasonal wishes are extended to Mrs Meynell and the family, indicating a polite personal correspondence.

A good example of Scottish antiquarian and scientific‑circle communication in the 1840s, with desirable references to Moore and the Royal Society.

TRANSCRIPTION: Antermony, Lennoxtown, Glasg. 2d Jan’y 1847. My Dear Sir, I am fav’d with your kind letter. Lord Northampton is, I am aware, a most excellent person: but his address to the Royal Society is the work of the Committee whose duty it is to draw it up, and to supply the materials. I am happy to be able to enclose an autograph of Sir John Moore, and with all the best wishes of the season to Mrs Meynell, and your family, I am, Most Faithfully Y’rs, C. Macintosh.
