1863 Civil War Union Named 4th Mass. Reg. Deserter Handwritten Letter Document
Item Description:
- For sale is an original 1863 Civil War Union handwritten deserter letter/document.
- The letter is dated 1863 and details that a Private Edward Conners of Company F 4th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers deserted while the Regiment was on the march from Camp near Falmouth VA.
- It also details how several Civil War Scabbards, bayonet, cap pouches, rounds ball cartridges, etc. are worn out/used in service.
It reads:I certify that Private Edward Conners of Company F 4th Regt. Mass. Vols. did desert while the Regt. was on the march from Camp near Falmouth VA to near Banks Ford VA January 21, 1863. He having his gun and equipments with him they bring charged on Pay Rolls of Jan, and Feb. 1863.
I further certify that the following are worn out in service (1) One Bayonet, (11) eleven Bayonet Scabbards, (5) Five Cap Pouches and Conre Picks, (3) Three Cartridge Box Plates, (3) Three Cartridge Box Bells, (3) Three Cartridge Box Bell Plates, (1) One Waist Belt, (1) One Waist Belt Plate. Also expended in service (1200) twelve hundred rounds Ball Cartridges and (200) two hundred Percussion Caps.
- The letter/document doesn\'t appear to be signed by the writer and on the back is handwritten \"Retained\" 3 times. There is also a blind stamp upper right corner pictured. A typed copy of the letter will also be included.
- The letter measures 7 1/4\" x 9 1/4\".
Condition
- The letter itself is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or repairs. The handwriting has lightened over time but is still very legible.
