During the 1850s and 1860s, Yonkers was a rapidly developing Hudson River community transitioning from a semi-rural village into an important early industrial center. Located just north of New York City along the eastern bank of the Hudson, Yonkers benefited from both river access and improving transportation links, including the Hudson River Railroad (completed in the early 1850s), which connected it directly to Manhattan and upstate markets.Originally part of the vast colonial-era holdings of the Philipse family—centered around the manor at Philipse Manor Hall—Yonkers had been a quiet agricultural area through the early 19th century. By mid-century, however, its abundant water power from the Saw Mill River and proximity to New York City encouraged the growth of mills and factories.
